Updates and recovery

How the box keeps Epilykos and itself up to date, and rolls back when something goes wrong.

Epilykos updates

The box looks for new signed releases of Epilykos and installs them itself:

  • Each release is verified before it's installed, and pinned by its digest, so the box runs exactly what was checked.
  • After an update, the box checks that the new version is healthy. If it isn't, it goes back to the version it had before.
  • Epilykos updates are separate from updates to the operating system, so each can be rolled back on its own.

You install updates from Settings → Updates. Install updates automatically starts switched off; see Updates and system.

System updates

When an update to EpilykosOS itself is offered in Settings → Updates, the box downloads it and installs it into a spare system slot while it carries on monitoring as normal. Nothing changes until you restart. The new system is only kept once it has run properly; if it doesn't, the box switches back to the previous one by itself.

Clock and time zone

Settings → System → Time and storage shows your time zone and whether the clock is synchronised. A box without internet can slowly drift, and you can correct its clock from your browser. Daily totals and forecasts follow the time zone, and changing it restarts Epilykos.

Database checks

If the box stops unexpectedly (during a power cut, say), Epilykos checks its database a minute after starting up again, and it also checks once a week. The check runs in the background without getting in the way of the dashboard. It tells you about problems; it doesn't try to repair them.

Backups

The daily snapshots live on the same SD card as everything else, so if the card fails, they go with it. That's why a reminder asks you once a month to download a backup and keep it somewhere else; see Backup and restore.
