Wi-Fi setup

Connect the box to your network with Ethernet, Raspberry Pi Imager, a wifi.txt file or your phone.

The box needs to be on your network before you can open its dashboard. With an Ethernet cable there's nothing to set up: just plug it in. For Wi-Fi, pick whichever of the three ways below suits you.

2.4 GHz only

A Raspberry Pi 3B can only see 2.4 GHz networks. It also won't see a router on channel 12 or 13 until it knows which country it's in. Set the country in Raspberry Pi Imager or in wifi.txt; otherwise the box takes it from the time zone you choose during setup, which only happens after Wi-Fi is working.

With Raspberry Pi Imager

Add EpilykosOS to Raspberry Pi Imager's list using this repository URL:

https://github.com/ashipaek0/epilykos-os/releases/latest/download/epilykos-os-imager.json

Then choose EpilykosOS, and enter your Wi-Fi network and Wi-Fi country in Imager's settings before you write the card.

With a wifi.txt file

Once the card is written, open its boot drive on your computer. You'll find a file there called wifi-example.txt.

Make a copy of it in the same folder, name the copy wifi.txt, and fill it in:

wifi.txt
ssid=Home Net
password=your-wifi-password
country=NG
hidden=no
LineWhat to put
ssidYour network's name, exactly as your phone shows it.
passwordIts password, 8 to 63 characters. Leave it empty for an open network.
countryThe two-letter code of the country the box is in, such as GB, US, NG or DE.
hiddenyes if your network doesn't broadcast its name.

Put the card back in the Pi and power it on.

The box reads wifi.txt once, saves the network, and then deletes the file so your password doesn't stay on the card.

From your phone over Bluetooth

EpilykosOS supports Improv Wi-Fi, so you can give it your Wi-Fi details over Bluetooth:

  1. On a phone or computer with Chrome, go to improv-wifi.com.
  2. Choose Connect device to Wi-Fi and pick Epilykos.
  3. Choose your network and enter its password.

The box opens Bluetooth setup by itself when it has been without a network for 2 minutes. There's no need to pair the Pi in your computer's Bluetooth menu; setup doesn't use pairing.

Change Wi-Fi later

In Settings → Network → Wi-Fi, press Change Wi-Fi to open Bluetooth setup, then connect from improv-wifi.com as above. If you need longer, Keep setup open 15 more minutes gives you more time.

Can't find the box?

  • Try http://epilykos.local:3000. If your device can't open .local names, use the IP address your router gave the Pi instead.
  • If devices on your network can't reach each other at all, the router is keeping them apart: turn off its "AP isolation" or "client isolation" setting and restart it. Connecting the Pi with an Ethernet cable also gets around it.
